Frequently Asked Questions
How often are city petrol prices updated?
We update our city averages daily using data from thousands of forecourts across the UK to ensure you see the most accurate local price trends.
Why is petrol cheaper in some cities than others?
Local competition is the main driver. Cities with more supermarkets and independent retailers fighting for customers tend to have lower prices than those with fewer options.
Does this include all petrol stations in the city?
Our data covers the vast majority of UK forecourts. We aggregate prices from major supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons) and oil majors (BP, Shell, Esso, Texaco).
How do you calculate the city average?
We calculate the mean price of all Standard Unleaded (E10) and Diesel (B7) reports received from stations within the city's greater metropolitan area over the last 24 hours.
What is the cheapest city for petrol right now?
Rankings change daily, but Northern cities like Manchester and Leeds often compete for the top spot due to high supermarket density. Check the live table above for today's leader.
Why are prices higher in London?
London stations face significantly higher ground rents, business rates, and operating costs, which are passed on to drivers. However, pockets of value exist near big supermarkets.
Can I filter by specific fuel types?
Yes. Our city data focuses on the two most common fuels: Unleaded (E10) and Diesel (B7). Super Unleaded is not currently included in the main index.
Do you track motorway prices near cities?
No, this specific index excludes motorway service stations to avoid skewing the city average with artificially high prices. See our Motorway Hub for those details.
Is diesel always more expensive in cities?
Historically yes, due to higher taxation and refining costs. The gap fluctuates but diesel generally commands a premium of 5-10p per litre over petrol.
How can I find the cheapest station in my city?
Use the Resolvo map to zoom into your specific neighborhood. This page shows the city-wide average, but local pockets can be cheaper.
Do supermarket fuel prices vary between cities?
Yes. Tesco, Asda, and others bake local competition into their pricing algorithms. A Tesco in Bradford might be 3p cheaper than a Tesco in Bristol on the same day.
When is the best time to fill up in a city?
Late evenings or midweek can sometimes be cheaper as stations adjust prices, but the biggest saving comes from choosing the right location rather than the right time.
Does this data cover electric vehicle charging?
No, this page tracks liquid fuel. Visit our EV Charging Map for live availability and costs of charging points in your city.
Why does the price change so fast?
Oil prices, wholesale costs, and local competition move constantly. Retailers adjust prices daily (sometimes hourly) to protect margins or undercut rivals.
Are independent stations cheaper than big brands?
Often yes. Independent sites in cities often aggressively undercut major brands to win business. They are definitely worth checking on our map.
How accurate is the 'Station Count'?
This represents the number of active stations sending us price data in that city's zone. It gives you an idea of the sample size used for the average.
Why is there a big price difference within the same city?
A city can have 'expensive zones' (near motorways or affluent areas) and 'cheap zones' (near Asda/Costco). The difference can be 10p+ per litre in just a few miles.
Do you include membership prices like Costco?
Our city averages are based on standard public prices. Costco is often the cheapest, but requires membership, so it counts as a specific outliers in the 'Brands' battle.
Can I report a wrong price?
Yes! If you see a price on the map that is incorrect, you can submit a user report to help the community keep data accurate.
Is E10 fuel safe for my car?
E10 is the standard petrol grade in the UK. Detailed compatibility checks can be found on the government website, but almost all distinct petrol cars built after 2011 are compatible.
