Frequently Asked Questions
Is the cheapest station always the best?
Price is king, but check the queue! Extremely cheap stations (like Costco) can have long wait times. Sometimes paying 0.5p more is worth saving 10 minutes.
Why is this station so cheap?
It might be a 'loss leader' (selling fuel at cost to get you into the shop), or it might be an unmanned station with lower staff costs.
Is cheap petrol bad for my car?
No. All UK fuel meets BS EN standards. Cheap supermarket fuel is chemically similar to big brand fuel, minus some proprietary cleaning additives.
How do you find these prices?
We aggregate user reports, retailer feeds, and fleet card data to pinpoint the absolute lowest numbers in our database.
Is Costco always the cheapest?
Almost always, yes. Their membership model allows them to sell fuel at near wholesale price. We mark Costco stations clearly as 'Membership Required'.
Do these cheap stations run out of fuel?
It happens. When a station is 10p cheaper than rivals, tank runs happen. We try to flag shortages where users report them.
Why is the cheapest station 20 miles away?
We show the absolute lowest prices. Sometimes the best deal is far. Use the 'Near Me' filter to find the best deal within a realistic range.
Are these prices for E10 or E5?
These top lists are for Standard Unleaded (E10). Super Unleaded (E5) is much more expensive and rarely makes the 'Cheapest' list.
Does Asda have a national price cap?
They used to, but not anymore. Now Asda prices vary by town, though they remain one of the most aggressive discounters.
Can I trust 2-day old prices?
Be cautious. In volatile markets, a 2-day old price might be stale. Look for 'Today' or 'Yesterday' timestamps for 100% confidence.
Why are unmanned pods cheaper?
No staff salaries to pay, no shop to heat/light. AUTOMAT and similar unmanned stations pass these savings on to the driver.
Do cheap stations accept cash?
Many unmanned 'cheap' stations are Card Only. Costco is also Card Only (Debit/Amex). Bring a card if chasing the lowest price.
What is a 'Price War'?
When one supermarket cuts prices, local rivals often follow within hours. This cluster of drops is a local price war, great for drivers.
Is diesel included here?
The main list defaults to Unleaded, but check the toggle/tabs if available to see the Diesel leaderboard.
Why isn't my local Tesco on here?
This list is the Top 100 nationwide (or region-wide). Your local Tesco might be 'cheap' for your town, but not 'Top 10 in the UK' cheap.
Do cheap stations act as a trap?
Unlikely. But always check they are open. Some cheap prices are reported just before a station closes for refurbishment.
How much do I save per tank?
Filing at a 'Cheapest' station vs a Motorway station can save £15-£20 on a single tank. It adds up to hundreds a year.
Are independent cheap stations safe?
Yes. They are regulated just like big brands. 'Bobs Gas' sells the same physical liquid as the Shell down the road.
Can I set an alert for cheap fuel?
Not yet, but we are building a 'Price Alert' feature for registered users to get notified when prices drop nearby.
Why do prices end in .9?
Psychological pricing. 139.9p looks much cheaper to the brain than 140.0p. It's an industry standard trick.
