Frequently Asked Questions

Can I charge my EV at the airport long stay?

It depends. Some airports (like Heathrow) promote EVs but advise against leaving them plugged in for weeks due to safety/capacity. Others have dedicated 'green' zones. Always check specific terminal rules.

Is airport charging free?

Rarely now. Most airports charge a premium p/kWh rate on top of the parking fee. It is often cheaper to fill up at a rapid hub just outside the airport perimeter.

Does Heathrow Meet & Greet charge my car?

Some premium valet services offer an 'EV charge' add-on where they will return your car with a full battery. You must book this specifically.

Are there rapid chargers at Gatwick?

Yes, Gatwick has a Gridserve Electric Forecourt nearby with high-power chargers. It is better to use this before entering the drop-off zones.

Can I use the Short Stay chargers for 1 week?

Technically yes, if you pay the Short Stay parking rate (which will be hundreds of pounds). It is not cost-effective. Use Long Stay options.

Do I need my own cable at airports?

For terminal parking (7kW/22kW), yes, you usually need a Type 2 cable. For rapid hubs on the perimeter, cables are tethered.

What happens if I run out of charge in the drop-off zone?

This is a nightmare scenario. You will likely be fined for blocking the lane. Ensure you have at least 10% buffering before entering the airport loop.

Is Stansted EV friendly?

Stansted has charging points in the Short Stay car park and a high-speed hub at the nearby services. Pre-booking implies a guaranteed space but not always a guaranteed charger.

Do Manchester Airport hotels have charging?

Yes, many on-site hotels (Radisson, Clayton) have their own charging points which can be cheaper and more convenient than the official airport car parks.

How do I pay for airport charging?

Via app (Monta, Pod Point, etc.) or contactless at rapid hubs. Inside the barriers, it is often app-based activation.

Can I reserve an EV bay?

Some 'Priority' bookings allow this. Otherwise, it is a lottery. Arrive early or have a backup plan (like a perimeter rapid charger).

Are Luton Airport chargers working?

Luton has actively upgraded its infrastructure since the fire, with new safe charging zones. Check live status on our map.

Is it cheaper to park an EV at the airport?

Sometimes. Some airports offer a 'Green' discount on the parking tariff if you register your EV number plate in advance.

What if the chargers are full?

Airport chargers are in high demand. If full, you will have to park in a normal bay. This is why filling up *before* you enter the car park is a safer strategy.

Do Edinburgh Airport charges apply to Blue Badge holders?

Blue Badge holders usually get up to 1 hour free in drop-off zones, but charging costs are separate. Check the signs.

Why are airport chargers so slow?

Many are 7kW because they expect cars to be parked for hours (Short Stay) or days (Long Stay). They don't need to be rapid.

Is there a Tesla Supercharger at Heathrow?

Yes, there is a large Supercharger station at the Service Centre on the Bath Road, very close to Terminals 2 & 3.

Can I leave my EV at Drop & Go?

No. Drop & Go zones are strictly 10 minutes max. You cannot charge there.

Does Birmingham Airport have a Gridserve?

Not on site, but the NEC nearby has massive charging infrastructure which is a great alternative.

Is it safe to leave my EV plugged in for 2 weeks?

Check the operator's terms. Some have a maximum connection time (e.g. 24 hours) even in long stay. Valet parking is the safest bet for long trips.
